Hand Grip Exercise, A Way to Prevent High Blood Pressure?

McMaster University researchers suggest that hand-grip exerciser squeezing can help lower high blood pressure in patients taking anti-hypertension medications.The research was conducted on 23 individuals in their mid-60s who have been taking high blood pressure medications for at least 8 years.10 were part of the inactive control group while 13 were assigned to an exercise group.




The 13 people squeezed a dynamometer, an isometric hand exercise digital handgrip for two minutes at 30% of their maximum grip strength level. Then, they rested for four minutes and then squeezed for another two minutes. The exercises were done three times a week for eight weeks, four times per session, and between sessions, there is a rest day.

In just eight to ten weeks, there were significant large drops to their systolic blood pressure. There were at least 15 points drop with the higher number, during a heartbeat, manifesting the pressure in the blood vessels. These are good results compared to what medications can accomplish.

The conducted research has also proven that the handgrip exercises allowed greater blood flow to the heart as it make the walls of the blood vessels and the carotid artery more flexible.

Steps on how to do the hand grip exercise

1. Your right hand shall hold the grip. Squeeze it. In the next five seconds, hold it and then release. Repeat it as many as you can in two minutes. Then rest for two minutes.

2. Do the same to you left hand for the next two minutes.

3. Repeat the process for four complete sets each hand.
